Picture Book Advocacy

Many publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators have gone to the bat recently to advocate for the picture book as a vital medium for introducing early literacy and a love of reading.

Most recently, Patti Lee Gauch, former editorial director of Philomel Books, spoke at a Children’s Literary Salon at the New York Public Library entitled, “Acts of Mischief.”

From the article, “Gauch described how books that introduce chaos into a controlled environment and that are characterized by fun and playfulness tend to resonate with young readers.”

What do you think? Which were your favorite picture books when you were little?

My favorites included: Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are; Harry and the Purple Crayon; Lyle, Lyle Crocodile; Harry the Dirty Dog; Curious George; Madeline; and many, many more.
